USS Trathen DD-530, (a Fletcher class destroyer which along with the later Sumner class were the
mainstays of the WWII destroyer fleet), refuels from
USS Midway in the South China Sea Sept. 25,
1958. Note

refueling. In March of 1966
Trathen was towed to San Diego and later decommissioned in May of
that same year. She was struck from the Navy in 1972 and sunk as a target on New Year's Day
1976.

Refueling is a dangerous job at any time, but in rough weather it is extremely hazardous due to the
pitching and rolling of the ships and the waves washing over the deck. Many a sailor has been lost
during these excercises. The use of helicopters facilitates the present day rescue of most who end
up in the water.
