USS Midway in original configuration somewhere in the Med. early 1950s. Note the 5".54
guns (18) total. During her first conversion in 1955, eight were removed and eventually in later conversions the rest were also removed. Midway was the first class of United States carriers to have an armored flight deck, (the British carriers had armored flight decks during WWII), an addition the value of which was learned from hard experiences for the United States during WWII. After the war some V2 rockets were test launched from her. In the 1955 conversion which lasted until the fall of 1957 Midway gained among other things, a hurricane bow, angled deck and steam catapults. |
