USS Midway launching a VF-64 F3H-2 Demon in heavy seas. The launch
officer's timing is critical so as not to launch into a big wave such as the one above. In later years after several conversions, Midway became a little "top heavy" resulting in more deck roll. Several "Fixes" were tried over the years but the problem only got worse and Midway became known as a pretty "wet" ship. It must be unnerving to sit in that cockpit and see white water breaking over the bow and hoping the launch officer gives the signal to launch at the right time. It's a lousy way to get a bath if he is wrong. |
