USS Midway moored starboard side to Alpha Pier at NAS Cubi Point, PI. on 02 Oct 1958. (Note
elevated 5" gun). This was Midway's first visit to the "PI" and the infamous city of Olongapo. The
tropical heat and high humidity took its tole but we managed to suffer through it drinking San
Miguel beer which incidentally, made us suffer a lot more in a different way. The construction of
Cubi Point was still going on in 1958 but the Subic Bay Naval Station had numerous recreational
facilities for our weary crew and Manila, the "Pearl Of The Orient" was just a bus ride away on the
"Balute Special" which careened along mountain roads at breakneck speed while the passengers
shared their seat with pigs, chickens and everything else on its way to the public markets.
