USS Midway refules two destroyers in the South China Sea on New Years Day 1959

When a carrier is on a operational mission there are no holidays and activity goes on around
the clock. As Midway's escorting destroyers couldn't hold enough fuel to last between tanker
refills, they had to be refueled by Midway. It was a long dirty job but also exciting as the
destroyers came along side sometimes in rough seas. The signalmen were lucky as they could
talk between ships just using their arms, a very animated conversation. When you have been
at sea for a long time it is nice to just get close to another ship, a reminder that you are not the
only ones with the long hours and little sleep.
